Express Entry is the online system Canada uses to manage applications for three skilled-worker programs. It is not a separate immigration program. To enter the pool, you must qualify for one of those programs. Candidates are then ranked by their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score for invitation rounds.

Category-based selection is a way of selecting candidates from the Express Entry pool, not a fourth immigration program. The Minister establishes categories to meet economic objectives. Each round invites eligible candidates in CRS score order. You must still qualify for one of the three programs — CEC, FSW or FST — and enter the pool first.

The only Ontario nominee stream currently running: with a qualifying job offer from an Ontario employer in any NOC occupation, your employer starts the process and you then register an expression of interest to be scored and wait for an invitation. Self-employed physicians can apply without a job offer, under a separate set of requirements.
